INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC LESSONS
The Music Department employs a number of specialist peripatetic teachers to provide instrumental tuition on a variety of instruments. Lessons are organised during the school day, and are taught by specialist visiting teachers. The school has a policy to allow children to be excused from normal lessons to attend their music lessons provided that they keep up to date with all their work. Lessons will be rotated as much as possible on a weekly basis.
Lessons will not commence until the school is in receipt of payment. We hope to accommodate all children requesting lessons, but this cannot be guaranteed so please do NOT purchase any instruments until your child has received confirmation that lessons can be provided.
Should you wish to discuss your child’s instrumental lessons, please email Mr Allen [LAN@st-peters.bournemouth.sch.uk]

Does my child need their own instrument?
Yes. The most important part of learning an instrument isn’t the lessons, it’s the practice you put in between the lessons. If you require an instrument for your child, on occasion, the music department can have some instruments in stock to lend out. If not, the Dorset Music Service offers instrument hire and you can find them below.
https://www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/w/cost-of-instrument-hire-from-the-dorset-music-service
If you wish to buy your student an instrument out-right, when purchasing your student’s first instrument, a tip can be to check sites that sell second hand listings from individual sellers. but this is completely at your own financial risk and requires some knowledge of an instrument before buying from anywhere other than a reputable music store.
Timetables
When will they be published?
Our music department, peripatetic teachers, and finance department are working together to finalise timetables. We will be in touch as soon as they are confirmed.
Where can I find my child’s timetable?
- A physical copy of all timetables will be displayed on the noticeboard outside the music office. If your child has trouble finding it, please ask them to speak to a member of the music department.
- A digital copy will also be available in Microsoft Teams, in their dedicated instrumental lesson team. Timetables are stored under the Files tab and also posted on the discussion board for quick access.
Why does the timetable change each week?
We use a rolling timetable where possible. This means lesson times change weekly to minimise disruption to your child’s other subjects. Requests for fixed times cannot be accommodated unless directed by the SEN department, senior leadership, or if your child is in sixth form and has a free period.
Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Teams is used extensively at St Peter’s, including in the music department. Once your application has been processed by the finance department, we will add your child to the relevant Team (e.g. “Woodwind Lessons 25”).
Within their Team, your child will find:
- A copy of their timetable
- A discussion board where their instrumental teacher may post updates, instructions, or resources to support learning
If your child is not in the correct Team when timetables are published, please contact Mr Allen at LAN@st-peters.bournemouth.sch.uk or ask your child to come and see him in the music department.
Lesson Days – What to Expect
Should my child bring their instrument?
Yes – we encourage students to bring their own instruments, as they learn best on what they regularly practise with. The exceptions are large instruments (piano, keyboard, drum kit, double bass, etc.). Please ensure your child’s name and class are clearly labelled on the case. Many instrument cases look alike!
Is there somewhere to store personal instruments?
Yes – instruments can be stored in the Stockhausen (opposite the music office). Students should leave their instruments there before tutor time, take them out and tune them (if they know how) before their lesson, and collect them at the end of the day. Instruments must be taken home for practice.
Will my child be reminded or collected for their lesson?
No – students must make their own way to lessons on time. As the secondary site is much larger than the primary, it would take too much of our instrumental teachers’ time to collect students. Now that students are older, we expect them to take responsibility for attending.
What if my child needs to leave class or is late returning?
Students should politely let their class teacher know at the start of the lesson if they have music later. About 5–10 minutes before their music lesson, they should raise their hand and ask to be excused (taking their belongings with them).
If returning late to class, they simply need to knock and explain they were at their music lesson. Teachers are used to this – it happens often.
Missed lessons and refunds
If a student forgets to attend, refunds cannot be given, nor can lessons be rescheduled. For many of our peripatetic teachers, lessons are their sole income, so we thank you for your understanding.
Important note for PP-funded students – repeated unexplained absences may result in funding for lessons being withdrawn. Please make sure your child attends every week.
Payments
REMINDER! Payments must be made before the teaching week
With the exception of pupil premium, fully funded students should have received payment set up in ParentPay. At least the minimum instalment must be made in the week before your student’s first lesson. Lessons will not be given to students whose payments have not been made.
Other FAQs
What if my child will be absent?
Please email Mr Allen (LAN@st-peters.bournemouth.sch.uk) with at least 24 hours’ notice. We will try to reschedule the lesson if possible. It’s also helpful to leave a note on the relevant Teams page.
What happens if the instrumental teacher cancels?
If a teacher is unavailable, their lesson will be rescheduled. We aim for five lessons per half term, though occasionally there may be slightly more or fewer. Every lesson paid for will be provided.
What if my child no longer wishes to continue?
We understand students may change their interests. However, as cancellations affect our teachers’ income, we require half a term’s written notice emailed to finance@st-peters.bournemouth.sch.uk.
If your child is unsure, please encourage them to speak with someone in the music department before making a final decision – we’re here to support them.
How can I contact my child’s instrumental teacher?
As peripatetic teachers are only in school one day per week, email responses may be delayed. For urgent matters, please email Mr Allen [LAN@st-peters.bournemouth.sch.uk] and he will forward your details. Please include your name, your child’s name, a brief description of your query, and your preferred contact method (phone or email).
MUSIC CLUBS
Students are encouraged to participate in the extra-curricular activities the Music Department has to offer. Not only is this an opportunity for them to make new friends, it will greatly enhance their level of musicianship, reinforcing the work done with their teachers. A strong commitment to the group is required as pieces are prepared for public performances. Any student is welcome to join the school choir or the Concert Band. Practice rooms are available to students during lunchtimes, allocated on a first come, first served basis.

All students are positively encouraged to make good use of the wide range of physical activities and competitive teams available before school, at lunchtimes and after school, specially developed to cater for students of all abilities.
The school teams have a fine record of successes nationally, within the county and in Bournemouth Schools’ competitions and many individuals have gone on to represent their town, their county and their country. Boys and girls are encouraged to attend clubs if they have a keen interest in a particular activity and will be helped to set and reach targets in order to improve their performance. Participation, progress and enjoyment is the purpose of the extra-curricular programme and not the selection and preparation of school teams.
A full range of physical activities is also catered for in our popular Inter-house sports competition which runs throughout the year culminating in a summer sports day in July.
All of the clubs at St Peter’s School are staffed by either professional coaches or the PE Department. Some of these clubs will run for free and some clubs require a pre-payment usually for a six week block. A full programme of activities and timings will be available to students and parents during the first week of term. Regular attendees are rewarded and students strive for the annual Sports Person of the Year Award given for commitment, attitude and ability.
A variety of different clubs take place throughout the year
Football
Running
Rounders
Basketball
Gymnastics
Table Tennis
Rugby
Athletics
Tennis
Netball
Badminton
Cricket/Softball
In addition to the clubs offered, trips and visits to sporting events and tournaments are available where we can watch the professionals in action.
The school also enters competitions against other schools and actively helps to develop those performers who are gifted and talented.
Kit and Equipment
All equipment for sport is supplied by the School, although students are more than welcome to bring their own. The school cannot, however, accept responsibility for equipment brought in.
High standards of dress are expected in lessons, at club sessions and school matches. Football, Basketball, Athletics and Cross Country teams are all provided with shirts or vests. Rugby teams are also expected to wear school rugby socks and boys to wear their own Rugby jerseys for matches.
Safety
While all reasonable care is taken to ensure safe practice, students should be aware of the following safety considerations:
- All students playing Football and Rugby should wear studded boots and care should be taken to ensure that studs are NGB legal and in good condition.
- All students playing Football should wear shin guards.
- All students playing Rugby are encouraged to wear a gum shield.
We look forward to meeting many parents on the touchline.
