Values, Ethos & Vision

St Peter’s is a learning community with a rich tradition and proven track record of excellence. We are built on firm foundations and this keeps us grounded to our strong Lasallian principles. The mission statement of the school articulates how all members of our community should strive to live:

With Christ as our guide,

learning together,

loving God and each other,

becoming the best we can be

Five core principles of Lasallian Schools

In the words of St John Baptist de la Salle,“to touch the hearts of your students is the greatest miracle you can perform (Med 139.3 – feast of St Peter). Therefore, our mission as a Lasallian school has three elements at its core: Teaching Minds, Touching Hearts, Transforming Lives.

We take a holistic view of education, alongside the highest possible learning outcomes and examination results we aim to prepare our young people to not only contribute to society, but to transform it.

St Peter’s is a school where young people:

  • Continually develop their personal relationship with God
  • Respect, appreciate and care for others within and beyond their community
  • Are independent and collaborative learners
  • Develop their knowledge, understanding, skills, creativity and imagination
  • Are inquisitive, ambitious and excel in all that they do
  • Do their best and aspire to be their best
  • Are persistent: not afraid to make mistakes and learn from them
  • Are actively involved in their lessons so that, in class, they work even harder than their teachers

St Peter’s is a school where staff:

  • Appreciate that their role is a vocation and they are passionate about touching and winning the hearts of the young people, recognising the Christ within them
  • Create a safe, supportive and spiritual environment
  • Develop professionally and have the opportunity to develop spiritually
  • Enable young people to be prepared for learning and for life beyond school
  • Encourage great aspirations
  • Who plan and teach engaging lessons that effect deep learning and thus exceptional progress for every young person

Our leadership strategy is built upon the following pillars:

  • High quality teaching and learning delivering our curriculum – Embedding research findings to make teachers more effective at meeting the needs of all their students
  • Precise tracking and intervention Using data to measure performance and identify students needing support
  • Transformational Leadership including through Coaching – Developing staff to help them become the best they can be
  • Excellent Pastoral Support – Child centred approach with clear expectations, routines, rewards and sanctions
  • Collective Accountability – Ensuring regular monitoring takes place to highlight areas of strength and those for development.

It is widely recognised that leadership is second only to classroom teaching in its impact on student learning.  Leithwood et al’s (2006) widely-cited report shows that ‘leadership acts as a catalyst’ (p.4) for beneficial effects, including pupil learning. The report also distinguishes between the impact of headteacher leadership (typically 5-7%) and total leadership (27%).
