Inspiring Author Visit

A huge thank you to author Heather Davey, who visited the library this week to deliver an engaging and inspiring talk about her book The Ghosts of Merry Hall and her soon-to-be-published novel, The Memory Tree.

Students were fascinated to hear how Heather drew inspiration for her chilling gothic ghost stories, with graveyards and gravestones playing a key role in shaping her ideas. She also shared insights into the books she loved reading as a child, as well as those she enjoys today.

Heather offered valuable advice to aspiring writers, encouraging them to ensure that “something of interest takes place in each chapter” and to set a daily writing goal. Her own target is an impressive 1,000 words a day.

The session also gave students a behind-the-scenes look at the writing and publishing process, including editing, typesetting, cover design, proof copies, and bookshop tours to promote a new release. Heather explained how authors are paid for their work and how additional bonuses can depend on book sales.

At the end of the talk, students had the opportunity to ask questions, and Heather kindly gifted everyone a special The Ghosts of Merry Hall bookmark.
