Crowned Town Champions

Winton School kindly hosted the Year 10 Town Cup Final on their excellent 4G surface, allowing both teams to play attractive football.

St Peter's 3–2 Avonbourne (after extra time)

Our journey to the final was thoroughly deserved. After a narrow semi-final defeat last year, the boys were determined to go one step further this year. The season had been impressive, with 29 goals scored and only 11 conceded, while the team consistently demonstrated resilience and character throughout. Having beaten Avonbourne in the group stage earlier in the year, we entered the final as slight favourites, although we knew it would be a closely contested match.

The team took around 15 minutes to settle into the game, but once they found their rhythm, they began moving the ball confidently. The breakthrough came when Kai picked up possession 25 yards out and he unleashed a rocket which flew through the goalkeeper's hands and into the top corner. St Peter's managed the remainder of the first half well and went into the break leading 1–0.

After several substitutions, our second-half game management was impressive and highlighted the maturity the squad has developed when dealing with different situations. However, with just ten minutes remaining, Avonbourne scored on the counter-attack to level the match and send the final into extra time.

The opening five minutes of extra time were packed with drama. Joe – the Harry Kane of school football – latched onto a through ball and calmly slid his finish past the advancing goalkeeper to restore our lead. Scoring what looked to be the winning goal on his birthday made the moment even more special.

Avonbourne responded once again with a well-taken breakaway goal to make it 2–2, setting up a tense finale. Then, with just one minute remaining in the first period of extra time, Ed received the ball and advanced with it inside the penalty box and slid the ball past the keeper into the bottom corner and was immediately mobbed by everyone – he only seems to score big goals!

The final five minutes were managed superbly. Switching to a disciplined 4-5-1 formation, the boys defended resolutely and saw the game out to secure a memorable 3–2 victory and become Town Cup Winners 2025–26.

Huge congratulations to Lewis, who captained the side brilliantly, and to every player involved in this fantastic achievement. Special thanks also go to the parents and carers who came along to support the team – your encouragement was greatly appreciated.

A deserved reward for a fantastic season.
