February Monthly Must Reads

This month’s 'Monthly Must Reads' recommendations are all graphic novels, carefully selected for different year groups.

Graphic novels have a unique place in the world of storytelling. By blending powerful visuals with compelling narratives, they create an immersive reading experience. They are also a fantastic alternative to traditional novels — particularly supportive for students who may find long blocks of text challenging.

Pet-Sitter (The Baby-Sitters Club #18) by Ann M. Martin (adapted by Raina Telgemeier)

Year 7+

The Mancusis don’t have children — but they do have a house full of pets! When they need help, they call the Baby-Sitters Club. Although Kristy insists that the BSC doesn’t pet-sit, Jessi loves animals and takes on the challenge. With snakes slithering loose, hamsters falling ill, and tensions rising among friends, Jessi quickly discovers that pet-sitting is anything but simple. Can she manage the chaos — both with the pets and within the club?

A fun, fast-paced story about responsibility, friendship, and problem-solving.

Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman

Year 8+

In a divided society where black Crosses hold power over white Noughts, Callum and Sephy’s friendship defies the rules. As their bond deepens into love, they must navigate prejudice, political unrest, and growing violence. This powerful and thought-provoking story explores racism, inequality, and the consequences of division. Emotional and gripping, it encourages readers to reflect on justice and society.

Nimona by ND Stevenson

Year 9+

Nimona is a mischievous shapeshifter with a flair for chaos. When she becomes the sidekick to villain Lord Ballister Blackheart, their mission is clear: prove that the kingdom’s heroes aren’t as heroic as they seem. As pranks escalate into dangerous battles, deeper secrets begin to surface. Clever, funny, and surprisingly heartfelt, Nimona explores identity, loyalty, and the fine line between hero and villain.

Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

Year 10+

A powerful autobiographical graphic novel, Persepolis follows Marjane Satrapi’s childhood in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War.

Through striking black-and-white illustrations, Satrapi portrays the contrast between private family life and public political upheaval. Honest and deeply personal, this book offers insight into history, resilience, and growing up in extraordinary times.
