Year 9 Scholars Deep Think Day

Year 9 Scholars enjoyed an inspiring start to their day with a talk from engineer and former student Craig Barry from Yunex Traffic. He shared his journey into engineering and spoke about the key skills needed to succeed in the field.
Students worked in pairs to complete the Institute of Civil Engineering’s Pollution Control Challenge online. They investigated the source of pollution in a river and selected effective solutions to help improve the local environment.
In the afternoon, students turned their attention to local civil engineering issues. They identified real challenges in the area, researched potential solutions, and created detailed presentations.
They then presented their findings to a panel made up of Mr Clarke, Mrs Smith, Mr Josic, and Rachel Hayden, a civil engineer at WSP—one of the world’s leading engineering firms. The panel was extremely impressed with the clarity of the students’ ideas, the thoughtfulness behind their solutions, and the confident, well-presented presentations. They were especially amazed at how much was achieved in such a short time.
